Welcome to the Department of English and Literary Studies, Ekiti State University. It is one of the oldest Departments in the Faculty and in the University. The courses in the Department, as evident from our objectives above, are designed to make our students improve on their speaking skills, writing skills, rhetorical skills, critical reasoning skills, etc. Apart from these skills, students in the Department are expected to display their knowledge of grammatical competence, sociolinguistic competence, pragmatic competence, discourse competence, and literary competence (encompassing prose, poetry and drama) in their day –to- day interaction with people. These competencies will make it possible for them to interact with other speakers of the English language worldwide. As a Department, we are very passionate about making our students apply all the skills and competencies that are very important for them to have in both language and literature courses studied in the Department so that they can distinguish themselves and compete favourably with others after graduating from the University. At both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, we have competent, resourceful and research – oriented lecturers committed to imparting knowledge in our students. The Department runs B.A; M.A. and MPhil/ Ph.D programmes.
