Prof. Dare Owolabi (O.M.), the current Head of Department was born on September20, 1959 in the rustic community of Irun, Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State.

His elementary education was at his place of birth, from where he moved to Ajuwa Grammar School, Okeagbe Akoko for his secondary education, under the renowned philanthropist and educationist of British origin but Italian extraction, Late Chief (Dr) Guy Gargiulo. He attended Universities of Benin, Ibadan and Federal University of Technology, Yola, where he obtained B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. respectively. His Ph.D. is in English for Specific Purposes (ESP), one of the current areas in English language teaching and research. His areas of research interest include ESP as a form of Applied Linguistics, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and trends in Nigerian English as a variety of English with a life of its own. He is also passionate about literature and literary criticism.
