Philosophy

The Department was established for the purpose of equipping students with the knowledge of adequate analysis of language with great emphasis on Nigerian languages.  It is also to familiarize students with the analysis of languages of Nigeria, Africa and other world languages; to learn the theories of language analysis and to apply them to any language of their focus; to familiarize students with Nigerian languages in the areas of language and literature, and to study the culture and customs of Yoruba language speakers.  Finally, the Department was equally established to equip the students to be able to face academic and social challenges.

The Objectives and Mission Statement

Since its inception, the department has produced a sizeable number of students that can compete favourably well with their peers both within Nigeria and beyond.  The programmes in the department are designed to make the students understand the rudiments of linguistics and to make it easy for them to grasp the nitty-gritty of language analysis be it their mother tongue or other Nigerian languages, other African languages and some other languages of the world.

General Services and Academic Programmes

The department gives adequate materials in terms of personnel and equipment to the students as well as conducive atmosphere to learn and have first-hand information on the happenings coming up in their field.  Most importantly, the department equips the students for gainful employment in the labour market, especially in teaching, broadcasting, publishing, translation, administration and other fields of employment.
